Incinerator: Public say ‘No’ three times over

3rd December 2010 - the following article is reproduced by kind permission of Lynn News

THREE public meetings on the proposed waste incinerator at Lynn were held in West Norfolk this week – and each saw a resounding rejection of the idea from those who were attending.

More than 300 people went to the event at Lynnsport in Lynn on Tuesday evening, where a vote at the end of the meeting showed 313 against the incinerator and nobody in favour.

It was a similar picture at smaller evening parish meetings in Clenchwarton on Monday– 33 against, none for – and North Wootton on Tuesday – 40 against, none for.

Tuesday was a busy night for Mike Knights, from the farmers’ campaign against the incinerator, as he gave a talk at the North Wootton meeting, then went to Lynnsport to deliver a similar address to that gathering, chaired by scientist and former Norwich North MP, Dr Ian Gibson.

Norfolk County Council leader Derrick Murphy defended the authority’s position at North Wootton, where county councillor Ann Steward gave the case for the incinerator. The county council has appointed Cory Wheelabrator as its preferred contractor for the £600m project.
